Message from Principal Thompson

Stallion Families,

I hope you are enjoying your summer with some rest, relaxation and all kinds of fun! As we begin to gear up for the 2021-2022 school year, we are excited to announce our new school theme, “Lakewood is Out Of This World.” Our very own future 5th grade Stallions created this space theme out of their pride for our school, and all of our Stallions gave input to select our final theme! We are excited to take this year to new heights together as we focus on student agency, growth and achievement.

This year, we will have new Lakewood staff joining our family and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce you all to them! We would like to begin by announcing our wonderful new Assistant Principal overseeing kinder, first and second grade, Ms. Melissa James. Please read her introduction below, and we can’t wait for you to meet her!

As a reminder, the process of placing our students in their new homeroom classes is very important to us! While I know that some parents may be asking for class changes, unfortunately we cannot make any adjustments for homerooms. We must consider the parent and teacher input provided in the spring to meet each child’s unique needs, as well as the even distribution of students in each class. As the school year begins in August, we ask that you use the following campus procedure to address any concerns.

  1. First, reach out to the teacher directly with any concerns or needs regarding your child's experiences. We are all learning together and there will be an adjustment period.
  2. If after reaching out to your teacher you still have concerns, please reach out directly to their administrator:

NEW ANNOUCEMENTS
A Warm Stallion Welcome to our NEW Assistant Principal!

Melissa James is a native of Austin, Texas. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M at Commerce).  After graduating with a Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of North Texas, she has served within Dallas Independent School District since 1998.

Over the years, her passion for her students always transcended beyond the classroom. She has taken on various roles such as teacher, teacher of residency, Extended Day Site Director, Math Professional Learning Community chairperson, and Campus Instructional Coach.  She was even awarded Campus Teacher of the Year! She has been serving as an Assistant Principal since 2018

The district videoed Ms. James's Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings to serve as a model for the district’s principals to show how a PLC should operate. She has provided staff development training and spoken to the PTA about early childhood issues. She has led school-wide initiatives to improve instructional delivery for African American Students, as well as initiated a Campus Mentoring Program due to her overwhelming concern for students. Ms. James was also on the cover of Dallas ISD Newsline Newspaper with her class as she assisted Nathan Adams Elementary in receiving the National Excellence in Urban Education Award!

Ms. James has a passion for developing positive relationships with everyone within the school community, working with students and watching them grow, supporting teachers and staff so that they can reach their greatest potential, and strengthening a connection between school and home

in her off hours, Ms. James enjoys bowling, cabin life, and traveling. She has one adult daughter, a very special niece, and a wonderful lap dog named Rocky whom she loves to sit with while reading a good book!

Welcome to Lakewood, Ms. James! We can’t wait to get to know you!

General Reminder on School Staffing

Just like every summer, there are always changes on school staff...especially on a campus this large.  There may even be some staffing changes that will change what we announced on the May postcards. These are beyond our control, but please know that the administration is in the process of finalizing hiring decisions for all remaining open positions, and looks forward to sharing these teachers with you as soon as possible!
