Message from Principal Thompson

Stallion Families,

I hope you are staying warm and healthy! As we finish up our last week of celebrating Black History month, I’d like to share with you one of my favorite quotes by the great poet, Maya Angelou. She said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” 

As a community who comes together to advocate for all, thank you for making all of our students and staff feel loved, encouraged, appreciated, valued and celebrated! Throughout all of the challenges of this pandemic, we will remember the positive feelings you’ve created to overcome our obstacles and reach success together!

Stay tuned next week for announcements regarding 1) the rescheduled 2nd grade performance date and 2) information regarding mask mandates and quarantine policies.

Kids Heart Challenge

Our school will be kicking off Kids Heart Challenge in one week!! 

We are excited for our students to learn about keeping their heart healthy while helping support the mission of the American Heart Association.

Attendance Reminders

As a reminder parents don't forget to send a note when your child is absent and please include the reason why. Not submitting notes can lead to truancy. Preferred method of submitting notes is to submit them to the office.

J.L. Long's "LONG RUN" Fundraiser

The 24th Annual Long Run on April 14th is a certified 5K run and 1K Fun Run / Walk at Willis C. Winters Park (across from Woodrow)!  It's the only fundraiser sponsored by the J.L. Long Middle School PTA, and we would love support from Lakewood families!

Proceeds are targeted to bridge critical gaps in the J.L. Long Middle School budget, including:

  • Fees associated with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program
  • Funding needed to support Peace Pantry
  • Leadership Cadet Corps uniforms
  • Instruments for band and orchestra
  • Equipment for science labs
  • Supplemental books and educational materials
  • Entry fees and transportation for Long's Math & Science Team, athletic and music competitions
  • Transportation for student field trips to promote a college-bound culture
  • Student gardens and campus beautification
  • 6th grade "Buc Camp" orientation

District Cell Phone Policy

For safety purposes, the district permits students to possess personal telecommunication devices such as, cellular phones. However, such devices shall not be visible and shall remain off during instructional time. We have seen an increase of use of devices for student to parent communication during the school day. Please support us in talking to our students about not using these devices during the day.

TEXAS PTA ANNNOUNCEMENTS

On February 28, beginning at 12 pm, Texas PTA presents Straight Talk: Dare to Self-Care. Two panels will give students, parents, policy makers, and medical experts an opportunity to share their stories and discuss what can be done - at home, in school and at the state level.   We invite PTAs, families, schools and all advocates to watch the LIVE event on the Texas PTA Facebook page. Questions will also be taken in advance and addressed as time allows. Submit your questions here.   Sign the pledge today and add your voice in support of Texas students.

Do you have an exceptional volunteer? Nominate them for a Lead like Marni award. Nominations open until April 1st.

Are you a seamstress? Excellent at thrifting? 

The Theater department is looking for helpful hands to find and create costumes for our upcoming production of The Music Man, Jr.!  (Think bonnets, hats, skirts, vests, high-collared shirts.)

Uniform Donations Needed!

Nurse Sundin is running low on emergency uniforms for both boys and girls!  Please see the urgent needs and drop any donations off with the front office next week as you're able! 

Most Urgent Items:
  • Boys pants size 6-7, 8-9 and 10-12
  • Girls pants size 6-7, 8-9 and 10-12
  • Boys undies size 4-5 and 6-8
  • Tooth chests / tooth necklaces for when students loose a tooth at school!  
Large Cardboard Boxes Needed for Theater Sets

The 3rd and 4th grade classes need large cardboard boxes to create sets and backdrops for their original musicals this spring.  

Please bring any large appliance or mattress boxes up to the front office and they'll deliver them to the auditorium!

Our school's beloved "Lakewood Outdoor Learning Area" (LOLA) has completed construction and is back in business!  We will soon begin with outdoor instruction for both our 2nd and 4th grade classes.

2022-2023 SCHOOL CALENDAR
Spring 2022 "Camp Lakewood"

Celebrating 10 years of our amazing Camp Lakewood events! Come join us March 4-6, 2022 at Camp Olympia. The Camp Lakewood campout is open to all Lakewood dads and kids and is organized by the Friends of Lakewood organization. 

Registration is open now. We are limiting campers to provide plenty of space to spread out and social distance. Hope to see you there!

Message from the School Nurses

As Covid is at the top of everyone's mind, we have a few reminders for our community:

  • If your student is sick at home, they should not come to school. Please assess your student(s) daily at home before sending them back to school.


  • If you student has tested positive, or been in close contact with a confirmed covid-19 case, please EMAIL Nurse Sundin at Jsundin@dallasisd.org or Nurse Assistant Mclemore-Vaughn at lmclemorevaughn@dallasisd.org. Emails reporting Covid-related information should contain: 
    1. Students’ legal name and class section / teacher
    2. Date of close contact or positive test
    3. Symptoms and any further context
    4. Vaccination status of the student
    5. Copy of positive/negative Covid-19 test if applicable


  • Quarantine guidance has been updated to reflect an isolation period of 5 days after a positive Covid test.  See those details HERE.


  • Those who have been fully vaccinated and are deemed a close contact will not be required to quarantine if they are not displaying symptoms. As always, anyone who displays symptoms of COVID-19 should stay home and contact their health care provider.


  • If your child has been fully vaccinated, please submit a copy of the vaccination card to lmclemorevaughn@dallasisd.org.
