A MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL BENTLEY

Hello Lakewood Families,

It has been a great first week! Stallions have done such a great job transitioning back to school, meeting their teachers, making new friends, focusing on learning, and even having recess outside when it's not too hot!

Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and patience this week as we work through some new systems, especially during dismissal. Please know that we are prioritizing student safety as we implement these new procedures.

We are excited to welcome Ms. McGill who is stepping in for Ms. Thompson while she is out on maternity leave. Ms. McGill brings experience and expertise, as well as previous Lakewood experience! We are certainly fortunate to have her here!

We are looking forward to a great 2023-2024 year!

Stallion Strong!

LeAnna Bentley

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Introducing Principal McGill!

While Principal Thompson is on maternity leave for the next 12 weeks, Principal Jean McGill will be our substitute principal; please give her a warm welcome when you see her around campus!

Principal McGill has been a substitute principal at Lakewood twice for other principals before this year. She retired in 2012 after 39 years in education. Principal McGill started at Nathan Adams as a first-grade teacher and served as principal for 12 years. Under her leadership, the school earned exemplary status from the Texas education agency and was one of only 17 schools in the country to receive the Excellence in Urban Education Award. She was a finalist for Principal of the Year. We are so excited and grateful to have her with us!

Make Your Stallion Strong Donation!

As Lakewood Elementary PTA’s primary family giving campaign, this annual drive raises critical funds to fill gaps in our school’s budget. Our goal is to raise $85,000 through your generous contributions. Our recommended ask is $150 per student, but our goal is 100% participation at any level of donation.

Donors that choose to give $500 or more will receive a Stallion Strong Donor Sign AND a special invitation to cocktails with Principal Thompson at private residence. (Date TBD in early 2024).

Dine & Donate!

Do you want to volunteer at Lakewood Elementary but don't know how? Please join us on Monday, August 28 at 6:00pm in the Lakewood Elementary Auditorium to hear all about it. There's an opportunity for everyone. Want to get ahead? Go ahead and do the required DISD Voly application here. Click "Create an account" if this is your first time. (This must be done each year.)

Students, join us in the Auditorium on Friday, August 25th at 7:20am to learn more about the Best Buddies program at LWE!

Best Buddies is a 501(c)(3) organization that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendship, leadership development and integrated employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). At the elementary level, Best Buddies offers a rich and diverse way to teach awareness, integrate students with disabilities with their peers and nurture genuine friendships of all abilities. The goal of the Best Buddies Elementary program is to introduce opportunities for peers with and without disabilities to learn, play and grow together.

Students in grades 2-5 will be able to pick up an application at the informational and apply to be matched one-to-one with a buddy. Students that were apart of the Best Buddies program last year are encouraged to attend and will need to reapply.

Parents, this is a student-only event. If your child would like to attend, please sign up here! If you have any questions please email emilykhildebrand@gmail.com

We look forward to seeing everyone and are excited for the Best Buddies program to continue Lakewood, to create a more inclusive and accepting school and community that acknowledges and values all abilities!

Before those pictures get buried in your camera roll, login to Tree Ring and share them with yearbook! We have designated folders so you can upload those 1st day of school pictures, or just cute candids with friends in your grade’s folder. Click here to upload.  The Lakewood school code is 1016003731184401.
