Message from Principal Thompson

Good morning, families,

I am so excited to welcome all of our Stallions this evening at Meet the Teacher, as well as on the first day of school! We can’t wait to get this school year started. This week our teachers have been learning, preparing, and gearing up to ensure our students have an outstanding first week back. I am so impressed with their passion, dedication and unwavering effort to provide the best educational experience they can for each and every student, and want to shout them out for the incredible expertise, care, and energy they bring to our special campus.

As we focus on excellent instruction and joyful classrooms, I want to remind our community of our number one priority, student safety. Lakewood administration and our SBDM leadership had the opportunity to meet with district officers and officials continue to support our students’ safety, and provided some additional information regarding some important safety measures in place or underway in Dallas ISD. Please see the safety letter for more details. In addition and with the help of our staff and community, we continue to reinforce the use of the following precautions:

  • Controlled, monitored entrances to our building with parent guests and volunteers checking at the front office at all times.
  • Video surveillance system to monitor grounds
  • Volunteer background check in VOLY prior to volunteering in building
  • Front office check-in system (Raptor System Technologies and ID) to verify identification and screen for sex offenders
  • PikMyKid dismissal system to secure students at pick-up location and notify parents of dismissal
  • Controlled, monitored front entrance with locked secondary security doors for entry from foyer
  • All staff and district employees must have visible badges at all times
  • Staff monitoring hallways throughout the day
  • Lock-blocks on every classroom door to immediately secure the room from the inside in the event of an emergency
  • Daily perimeter and door checks outside of the building
  • Locked exterior doors accessible only by electronic keycard or front door buzzer
  • Perimeter fencing on Wendover to secure the campus grounds
  • Regular safety drills to prepare for emergencies
  • District and State-performed campus safety checks

We look forward to a great 2023-2024 school year and we’ll see you all very soon!

Stallion Strong,

Principal Thompson

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Please take a moment to review the 2023-2024 vehicular circulation map to ensure you follow all carline and parking protocols.

Bus Route Times & Information

If your child is riding the bus, please email Mrs. Nowakowksi the student name and bus route so that she can add it to your student's PikMyKid account. BRMCKINNEY@dallasisd.org

Using the PikMyKid app (details below), please ensure that you have designated your child's mode of transportation with their bus number, or they will not be boarded on to the bus and you will have to come and pick him or her up from school.

In the mornings, buses will follow their designated routes and drop off at Lakewood. There are staff members on duty to escort and supervise bus riders in the school cafeteria until school starts.

In the afternoons during dismissal, students will go to their designated bus rider's location to be escorted to busses and verified in the Pik My Kid App before boarding.

The campus behavior coordinator shall take steps to maintain acceptable student conduct while riding school buses, including the discretion to deny the privilege of school bus transportation.  All Student Code of Conduct Offenses are subject to the same disciplinary actions while riding Dallas ISD provided transportation.  Students are expected to follow bus rules.

Please see additional Bus related information at https://www.dallasisd.org/Page/59008

Congratulations to Gloria Prieto-Puentes, our second grade dual-language teacher, for receiving the Service Above Self Award from the Rotary Club of Dallas.

The awards are presented to Dallas ISD educators who have shown excellence by “going the extra mile.”  Ms. Prieto created the Winnetka Theater Club and project WIN WIN, which promotes students’ love for reading English and Spanish.

Lakewood Elementary is Nut Free

At Lakewood, one of our values is to ensure we are advocating for all, and creating an inclusive environment for all of our students to feel safe at school. In order to minimize risk of any severe allegoric reactions, we have opted in as a “Nut Free”  school as of last year. This means our cafeteria offers alternate choices, like sun butter. In addition, we ask that outside food brought in for lunch, snack, and birthday celebrations also be free of any nuts. We understand this request may come at an inconvenience, but our intention is truly to accommodate and advocate for all students in order to continue to provide a safe environment for all of our learners.
