Message from Principal Thompson

Dear Stallion Families,

I hope this newsletter reaches each family having a wonderful summer full of joy, laughter, quality time, and hopefully some cool air! I sure have missed the students’ smiles each morning as they enter our wonderful campus. As we gear up for the 2023-2024 school year, we are excited to announce our new school theme, “SEAS the day!” SEAS stands for Successfully Educating All Students and this will be an exciting underwater ocean theme that represents a continuation of the hard work, progress, and growth we have made together, and keeping our mission and vision of advocating for all at the top of our minds. We are excited to continue our momentum and focus on strengthening our connections, developing leadership and advocacy for all, and excelling in academic growth and achievement.

I know many of you are anxiously awaiting news of your child's 23-24 Lakewood teacher. We are working to have that information for you prior to the meet the teacher date (August 10th - more details below). You may also get a special phone call from your new teacher in August, so make sure your contact information is up to date on dallasisd.org. As a reminder, the process of placing our students in their new homeroom classes is very important to us. While I know that some parents may be asking for class changes and special teacher requests, unfortunately we cannot make any adjustments for homerooms. We must consider the various input provided in the spring to meet each child’s unique needs, as well as the even distribution of students in each class. As the school year begins in August, we ask that you use the following campus procedure to address any concerns with your student's class placement.

  1. First, reach out to the teacher directly with any concerns or needs regarding your child's experiences. We are all learning together and there will be an adjustment period.
  2. If after reaching out to your teacher you still have concerns, please reach out directly to their administrator:

NEW ANNOUCEMENTS
Clear Backpacks Required for 2023-2024 School Year

The following information has been provided on the district site. Check back for any further updated information as the summer progresses. You can get one for FREE at the Back to School Kickoff on Saturday, August 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ellis Davis Field. Lunchboxes do not need to be clear, and monograms are permitted on clear/mesh backpacks.

In our ongoing effort to ensure safer schools, Dallas ISD will require clear backpacks for all students starting in the 2023-2024 school year.

As an additional option, mesh backpacks will be acceptable, however clear ones are preferred. Students may carry a small, nonclear pouch in their backpack to hold personal items, such as cellphones, money, and hygiene products. To support families, each student will be provided a durable clear backpack at no cost. Parents may also purchase the preferred clear backpack, or the acceptable mesh backpack, for their students.

A clear backpack policy alone does not ensure complete security. This proactive measure is just one of several updates to enhance student and campus safety. As a reminder, Dallas ISD’s Comprehensive Safety Plan is available at dallasisd.org/safety. We encourage everyone to visit the district’s website and social media channels for the latest updates.

Bus Information for Families

There are several school bus routes available for Lakewood students.

In the mornings, buses will follow their designated routes and drop off at Lakewood. There are staff members on duty to escort and supervise bus riders in the school cafeteria until school starts.

In the afternoons during dismissal, students will go to their designated bus rider's location to be escorted to busses and verified in the Pik My Kid App before boarding.

Using the PikMyKid app (details below), please ensure that you have designated your child's mode of transportation with their bus number, or they will not be boarded on to the bus and you will have to come and pick him or her up from school.

Please visit the Dallas ISD Transportation website for more information about bus routes.

This year we will continue to use PikmyKid as our dismissal platform. Now is a great time for all returning 1st through 5th grade families to get their apps set up! New to Lakewood students and incoming Kindergarteners will be uploaded into the PikmyKid system in the coming weeks. We will have a PikmyKid registration table at Meet the Teacher to help new families navigate set up! Below are some helpful links for returning families when it comes to registering and using the parent app.
