Dear Lakewood Families, As we settle into the heart of the school year, I continue to be so proud of how our students, staff, and families have come together to make this a positive and productive season at Lakewood. The energy on campus has been wonderful, classrooms are buzzing with learning, and our students are showing such growth in their confidence, curiosity, and kindness. As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping all students and families safe during arrival and dismissal, I want to provide important clarification on the rules regarding electric bicycles (e-bikes) and electric scooters on or near our school campus. The City of Dallas has established clear ordinances about where motor-assisted scooters and electric bicycles may operate, and these rules directly affect sidewalks and streets around our school. Key Points for Our School Community: - Electric Scooters
- May not be operated on sidewalks anywhere in Dallas, including those adjacent to schools.
- They are also not permitted in school crosswalks, on school sidewalks, or within designated pedestrian areas.
- Electric Bicycles
- By state law, e-bikes are treated similarly to traditional bicycles. However, Dallas city ordinances restrict their use on sidewalks that are primarily pedestrian pathways.
- For safety reasons, e-bikes should not be ridden on school sidewalks, in front of building entrances, or through crosswalks where children and families are walking.
- Students or visitors arriving by e-bike must dismount at the edge of school property and walk the bicycle while on sidewalks and pathways within or directly adjacent to campus.
- Streets and Roadways
- Both e-bikes and scooters are allowed on streets with posted speed limits of 35 mph or lower.
- Riders must obey all traffic signals, stop signs, and crosswalk rules just like other vehicles and bicycles.
- On Campus Grounds
- Dallas ISD policy and campus safety practices prohibit the operation of motorized vehicles (including scooters and e-bikes) on school sidewalks, play areas, or pedestrian paths.
- Students should park bicycles and e-bikes only in the designated racks provided.
Our sidewalks are used daily by young children, families, and staff. Even at low speeds, scooters and e-bikes can create safety hazards in crowded areas. These restrictions are in place to protect pedestrians and ensure a safe environment for everyone on campus. We also want to remind families to talk with their children about being cautious when walking, biking, or riding scooters home, especially during dismissal time. While students have the right of way, they must also stay alert to their surroundings. Quick movements, distractions, or not checking for vehicles can lead to unsafe situations. If your student brings a bike or scooter to school, please remind them to only interact with their own. For safety and respect, students should not touch or move another student’s transportation. We appreciate your full cooperation in reinforcing these expectations with your children. Working together, we can maintain safe arrival and dismissal procedures that reflect the care and high standards of our school community. Thank you for your continued partnership, encouragement, and involvement in making Lakewood such a special place for students to grow and learn.
