TikTok Security Message from DISD

January 27, 2023

Dear Dallas ISD Families:

In today’s world, we all have a duty to protect students, parents, team members and the districts’ private information online. Dallas ISD takes this responsibility seriously and will continue the necessary measures to ensure confidential information remains secure.

Federal and state officials recently determined the video-sharing platform TikTok poses a serious security risk. To better protect against cybersecurity concerns, the district is removing access to TikTok from all devices and networks effective today.

This means TikTok will not be accessible on any device when connected to the district’s Wi-Fi. Though TikTok can still be used from private devices and networks outside of Dallas ISD, the app should not be opened when on district devices.

Experts believe the cybersecurity risk stems from the belief that TikTok’s parent company tracks data from users—including when, where and how a person uses the internet—that could be used to share sensitive information and ultimately harm our IT infrastructure.

In this ever-changing digital age, we know videos can provide a level of creativity for students to engage in learning. To support innovative instruction, other video-sharing platforms can be used on district devices within Dallas ISD’s networks.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership as we continue to secure sensitive information in our care.

Sincerely,

Tiffany Huitt

Chief of School Leadership

Dallas ISD

PREVIOUSLY SHARED INFORMATION

National School Counseling Week is Feb. 6-10, 2023. The purpose of this week is to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.

Family Input Form for the 2023-2024 School Year Class Assignments
  • As we begin the process of looking ahead to creating well balanced classes for the 2023-2024 school year, we would like to streamline input provided by families through this form. Please know that we are not able to take specific teacher requests.
  • As we work through this process, we keep our Lakewood Vision at the forefront: We are a community of leaders, valued individuals and problem solvers, who advocate for all. Note this will be viewed and analyzed by the current Lakewood Staff . We ask that you refrain from any disparaging comments and remain focused on your student's needs.
  • This form will close on Sunday, February 5, 2023

New Year, new Lunch Bunch! You asked, and we have made one BIG change from fall—SHORTER SHIFTS!  But we are still in need of parent volunteers!  Even if you haven't previously volunteered or been to a training, Lunch Bunch is open for ALL parents to step in and take a shift.

10:15-12:00 for K-2 (6 spots)

11:45-1:30 for 3-5 (4 spots)

Volunteers supervise the students in the cafeteria so the teachers don't have to. This is a critical role to give teachers back time to lesson plan and work. Please sign up to be a lead volunteer if you have attended training or if you volunteered in the fall.

The sign up for February is available now here
