Dear Lakewood Families,

It is hard to believe we have already wrapped up week three of school. The energy across campus is contagious, and it has been wonderful to see classrooms settling into strong routines. Students are engaged in learning, teachers are leading with focus and care, and our staff continues to work together to make sure each day runs smoothly.

This week also reminded me how lucky we are to have such a dedicated community. Our Lakewood team did an outstanding job navigating Monday’s challenges while keeping the needs of students at the center. Even with the power down, the learning never stopped, and our staff rallied around our dismissal system to ensure each child was dismissed safely! I also want to extend heartfelt appreciation to our PTA volunteers, Shannon Stuart, Shannon McKie, and Elizabeth Hintlian, who immediately stepped in to support. Their quick action and willingness to help exemplify the spirit of Lakewood.

Finally, thank you to our families for your patience and encouragement as we move through the early weeks of the year. Your partnership helps us stay focused on creating a positive and supportive environment for all Stallions. We look forward to the many great things still ahead this fall.”

Stallion Strong,

Brittany Thompson

Our 2025–2026 PTA budget is powered by you—our amazing Lakewood community!

Have you ever heard about the SBDM Committee a.k.a. The Site Based Decision Making Committee? This is an appointed/elected group of teachers, parents, and community members who advise Principal Thompson and her leadership team in the planning and decision-making process to improve student achievement as outlined by state policy and district policy.

The SBDM Committee advises the Principal in the following five areas:

  • Goal Setting
  • Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
  • Budgeting
  • Staffing Patterns
  • School Organization

Additionally, as school related issues occur or school activities and initiatives evolve, the SBDM Committee may authorize a sub-committee to resolve the issue or implement the activity and initiative.

Communicating directly with your child’s teacher and Assistant Principal is always recommended as your first line of inquiry.  Should you have more general questions or comments related to the topics above, you can email  sbdm@lakewoodelementary.net.

The SBDM does host two open meetings a year for any member of the community to attend- one in October and one in April. Meeting dates and past minutes are posted on our website and kept up to date in eNews.  On occasion, dates change, and those notices are also included in eNews with as much advance notice as possible.

TONIGHT!! Attention 5th Grade Families:Come to the DC & Williamsburg 2026 Trip Info Session

Information Meeting-

When: Thursday, August 28th, 2025 at 6:00 pm

Where: Lakewood Auditorium

Its time to start once more with our Student travel program! We’re going to Washington DC and Williamsburg in Summer 2026, and this is your last chance to get enrolled!!

We’re excited to tell you more about the trip we’re planning with EF Tours, our educational travel partner. Please be sure to register for this info session to be considered for this opportunity.

When students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about themselves, and grow more confident. These skills are critical for creating the global citizens of tomorrow, and we would love to have your student join us on this adventure.

  • In this info session, we’ll talk about:
  • How this opportunity will benefit your student
  • What we’ll see and do on our trip
  • Everything that’s included in this experience
  • How your child can earn academic credit
  • How we’re keeping this safe and affordable
  • How to enroll on this trip (before it fills up!) during EF’s risk-free enrollment period

There are limited spots on this trip, so we would love to have you attend this meeting to learn more about this exciting opportunity!

This is a student-only event providing information about what it means to be in Best Buddies and its impact on participants.

Additional opportunities to partner with Best Buddies will be shared including the existing Best Buddies Friendship Program for student paired activities during the school day, and the new volunteer oriented Best Buddies Club. This club will support our school in before or after school opportunities for second - fifth graders.

Individual School Picture Day is almost here!

September Attendance Awareness Month

September is Attendance Awareness Month, a time for individuals and organizations to learn about attendance issues, absenteeism, and the effects attendance can have on academic performance and success.

School attendance is essential to academic success, but too often, students, parents, and schools don’t realize how quickly absences, excused or unexcused, can add up to academic trouble. Chronic absence—missing just 18 days per school year—can lead to third-graders being unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing courses, and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.

Lunch Buddies is a chance for a parent to join their child for lunch once a year!

NEW For Fall of 2025:

  • Lunch Buddies will occur on Tuesdays and broken down by grade level.

IMPORTANT CARPOOL REMINDERS

To help keep our dismissal process safe and respectful for everyone, we ask that all drivers follow the carpool guidelines:

  • Use only the designated single lane down Lake Circle Drive.
  • Please remain in the carpool line until you reach Hillbrook and then choose either the Red Lane or the Blue Lane (closest to school).
  • Do not block streets, neighbors’ driveways, or alleyways.
  • Show courtesy and patience to other drivers and our community members.

Thank you for helping us keep our students safe and for being considerate of our neighbors who share this space with us each day.

Message from Nurse Kyker:

Important – Consent Needed for School Health Services
Under Texas Senate Bill 12, the school nurse and staff must have written permission from a parent or guardian before providing a student with any health-related services—this includes things as simple as checking their temperature or giving first aid. The only time care can be given without written consent is in a life-threatening emergency. Parents are asked to complete the annual Health-Related Services consent form to ensure their child can receive care when needed.

Calling all 4th and 5th Grade performers—singers, dancers, and actors—this is your time to shine!

Important ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL info

This year we will continue to use PikmyKid as our dismissal platform. Now is a great time for all families to get their apps set up! Students new to Lakewood will be able to register in the app after 8/3.

Below are some helpful links for families when it comes to registering and using the parent app.

If you don't see your children in the app after 8/3, please email Mr. Campbell at joncampbell@dallasisd.org

'25-'26 Bus Routes

If your child is riding the bus, please email Mr. Campbell the student name and bus route so that he can add it to your student's PikMyKid account.

Using the PikMyKid app, please ensure that you have designated your child's mode of transportation with their bus number, or they will not be boarded on to the bus and you will have to come and pick him or her up from school.

In the mornings, buses will follow their designated routes and drop off at Lakewood. There are staff members on duty to escort and supervise bus riders in the school cafeteria until school starts.

In the afternoons during dismissal, students will go to their designated bus rider's location to be escorted to busses and verified in the PikMyKid App before boarding.

The campus behavior coordinator shall take steps to maintain acceptable student conduct while riding school buses, including the discretion to deny the privilege of school bus transportation.  All Student Code of Conduct Offenses are subject to the same disciplinary actions while riding Dallas ISD provided transportation.  Students are expected to follow bus rules.

Please see additional bus related information here.

Let's start the school year off on the right foot and use the crosswalks and pay attention to the painted curbs!!
