An Ode to Lakewood as my term as PTA President comes to an end.....

A question for our parents from the President of the PTA,

Can you believe there are only 8 more school days?

This year has been so incredibly busy,

That on more than one occasion, my head has felt dizzy,

And just when I thought I would wave the white flag,

Something special would happen, worth quite a brag,

From our crossing guards driving new wheels,

To the beautiful green grass on our new soccer field,

Remember the mud pit and weird giant metal box?

There are so many moments when I’ve thought, “This school rocks!”

Like when the students treated multicultural day like a celebration,

They were all so excited to learn about other nations,

We had some amazing field trips - to Austin, to Fort Worth, and Samuel Farm, too,

The Arboretum, the DISD Nature Center, and the Dallas Zoo,

Dallas Children’s Theater, Nasher, Perot, and Klyde Warren, just to name a few,

And when DISD had no buses for our trip to the Frontiers of Flight,

PTA chartered the buses to make everything right,

Even our Special Ed students were able to take two trips,

And my heart was full at the 1st ever Walk for Best Buddies Friendship,

How about our food drive that was such an amazing success,

That we filled the Woodrow Peace Pantry and gave North Texas Food Bank the rest,

We brought a talent show to Fall Fest, which drew quite a crowd,

And the Lost and Found fashion show made this model proud,

Don’t forget House Party at Birdies, what an amazing night,

Where we blew the previous fundraising record out of sight,

Speaking of birdies, the kids loved seeing the LOLA Night critters,

Yes, the owl was cute, but the the tarantula gave me jitters,

I love our students and love seeing them smile,

It even makes wearing that Stallion costume worth all the while,

Our teachers our awesome, so is our staff, and, of course, our principal, too,

And all of the members of the PTA, I couldn’t have done it without you,

A special shoutout to my VPs - Elizabeth Hintlian, Alex Fergus, and Shannon McKee,

Thanks to your hard work, I’ll always cherish this year at Lakewood Elementary,

So before my wits completely unravel,

I present to you, Shannon McKee, the Lakewood PTA presidential gavel!

2026 PTA Honorary Life Membership Award Recipients

Our award recipients were honored at the PTA End of Year Awards Ceremony on May 12, 2026.  Lakewood Elementary PTA presented Susan Powell, Alex Fergus, Caitlin Maddox, and Elizabeth Hintlian with PTA Honorary Life Membership Awards in recognition of their outstanding dedication, leadership, and service to our Lakewood Elementary school community.

Over the years, Susan has generously served as Assistant Treasurer for two years, Treasurer for two years, Stallion Strong Committee member for two years, and Upper Grades Retention Chair for one year. She consistently went above and beyond, including encouraging teachers to fully utilize their classroom credits to benefit students and classrooms.

As Treasurer, Susan served in one of the PTA’s most important roles with exceptional diligence, organization, and care. She expertly managed budgets, purchases, orders, and countless behind-the-scenes details, always ensuring everything was handled responsibly and efficiently. Her steady leadership and attention to detail gave so many of us confidence and peace of mind throughout the year.

Susan’s commitment, integrity, and heart for service have made a lasting impact on our school, and we are incredibly grateful for all she has given to the Lakewood community.

Alex has made an extraordinary difference at Lakewood through her dedication, positivity, and willingness to serve wherever needed. While serving as Communications Chair, she simultaneously chaired Fall Fest, managed the weekly eNews, and served on the SEL Committee while also serving as a Room Rep — an impressive combination of responsibilities that required exceptional organization, creativity, and commitment.  Alex also served on House Party Committee, House Party Chair, and as VP of Ways and Means.

She consistently brought fresh ideas and positive energy to everything she touched. One standout example was her creation of the Canva Committee, which elevated the quality and consistency of our communications and helped take it to the next level.

Alex continuously stepped in wherever help was needed and did so with care, flexibility, and optimism. Her ability to encourage others and keep spirits high — even during stressful moments — made a tremendous impact on the entire campus community and Lakewood is stronger because of her.

A former Lakewood student herself, Caitlin has spent years giving back to the schools and community that helped shape her. At Lakewood she has served as a Room Rep, on the Nominating Committee, Stallion Store Committee, House Party Committee, she’s been House Party Assistant Chair, House Party Chair, House Party Advisor, Parliamentarian, Community Partner Chair, Vice President — and, of course, Lakewood PTA President — to which she brought an incredible level of professionalism, energy, and thoughtfulness. Plus, an auditorium and hallway glow-up that students, staff and families will be enjoying for years to come.

Every role Caitlin touched became bigger, better, more defined, and more impactful because of her ideas and tenacity. She spearheaded LECPTA Auction Party’s post-Covid return. The in-person comeback of the century, that injected Auction Party with a renewed, strategic direction that our feeder pattern is still benefiting from today. As House Party Chair, she increased net proceeds from $75,000 to a quarter-of-a-million dollars.

There are people who participate in a school community, and there are those who truly shape it. Caitlin's leadership, heart, and commitment have made an immeasurable impact, and this recognition is a reflection of the countless ways she has strengthened and inspired the Lakewood community for years.

Elizabeth has served in one of the most important — and often unseen — roles on campus through her work on the Communications Committee, first serving on the Social Media and Canva Committees and then as VP Commuications/eNews Chair for two years. Countless hours have been devoted to crafting eNews, supporting campus communication, and bringing school initiatives to life with her incredible creativity and design talent. Elizabeth's patience, reliability, and heart have made a tremendous impact on students, staff, and families alike.

In her role as VP Communications, she oversaw several committees including Marquee, Website, Social Media, Canva, and Yearbook.  Her collaborative personality and leadership helped keep the school community connected, organized, and moving forward.

Beyond her many contributions, Elizabeth is deeply valued as a friend, teammate, and source of encouragement. Her kindness, intelligence, creativity, and giving spirit have left a lasting mark on Lakewood, and the entire community is better because of her dedication and heart.
